Think orange creamcicle. This is a good one for toning by shedding dead skin cells and smoothing out imperfections like wrinkles and scars. It can also be used as a spot treatment for acne, scars, cuts, or wrinkles.
All of my lip balms are on the softer side. I don't like hard lip balm. These will harden up in cooler temperatures, but with the press of a finger, or against your lips, they will melt perfectly.
When you are wearing the lip balm you will also inhale the scent emitted from the essential oils used, affecting the limbic system which controls our emotions, memories, and sense of smell. This allows the emotional support provided by each oil while moisturizing your lips.
Essential oils are lipid soluble, meaning they pass through the blood brain barrier very easily. Cell membranes are made of lipids and that allows the oils to slip easily through cell walls and start helping the cell immediately. When you apply essential oils topically to lips and skin they will provide relief very quickly.
Let's look at the essential oils used and their properties:
Orange (Citrus sinensis) ------------------------
Orange has a very strong, pungent smell. I love this oil and use it every morning with some peppermint in my diffuser. It is antiseptic, antispasmodic, antidepressant, and even a sedative.
Emotionally, orange can assist with anxiety. Even though it has an invigorating scent that tends to wake you up and get you going, at the same time it relieves anxious feelings which can promote better sleep at night.
Lemon (Citrus limon) ------------------------
Lemon is great for removing dead skin cells and toning the skin. It is antiseptic, antifungal, antidepressant, antiviral, and astringent. It is a wonderful detoxifier.
From an emotional standpoint, lemon can also alleviate feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression. It aids in concentration and clarity, helping you to focus on the task at hand. It also gives feelings of joy and playfulness.
Grapefruit (Citrus X paradisi) ------------------------
Grapefruit is also a cleansing oil with properties including antidepressant, antiseptic, and disinfectant.
Emotionally, grapefruit will instill feelings of respect for the body, body-acceptance, and a healthy relationship with food.
Mandarin (Citrus nobilis) ------------------------
Mandarin is another detoxifying, skin-cleansing oil because of the limonene found within. It is a great toner that improves blood circulation, which in turn keeps skin rejuvenated. It also promotes new cell growth.
Mandarin can assist emotionally by uplifting your mood and bringing down stress levels.
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) ------------------------
Bergamot is antibacterial, antifungal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic. Bergamot can help with sore throats and respiratory issues.
Emotionally, bergamot is wonderful for self-acceptance, self-love, confidence, and hope.
Tangerine (Citrus reticulata) ------------------------
Tangerine's antifungal and antiseptic properties make it great for treating acne and smoothing skin imperfections.
Tangerine can relieve emotional issues like feeling overburdened, lack of joy, and stifled creativity. It taps into your creativity and allows you to make room for fun again.
Clementine (Citrus clementina) ------------------------
Clementine is a powerful antifungal and antioxidant that is great for treating skin blemishes, wounds, and acne. It creates moisture balance in the skin by improving circulation.
Vanilla (Absolute) Bean Extract (Vanilla planifolia) ------------------------
Vanilla is antibacterial and rich in B vitamins and antioxidants. These properties make it great for treating acne, wounds, wrinkles, burns, and sun spots.
Emotionally vanilla can help with claustrophobia, depression, and especially anxiety.
Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Beeswax, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Avocado Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Therapeutic Grade Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Bergamot, Tangerine, and Clementine Essential Oils, Vanilla (Absolute) Bean Extract
Please note that unrefined shea butter was used and has a grit to it that can create white dots in the lip balm. This is normal and nothing to worry about.
Usage: Push lip balm up from bottom. This product will melt in the heat. Store in a cool, dry place. They withstand the heat fairly well, but just be aware of where you leave it. A hot car in the summer might be a mess. I always take a jar with me when I go kayaking and it gets pretty hot out there. The lip balm does fine inside my dry bag. It stays solid, with only a bit of softening. Do not store in refrigerator as it will cause the kraft packaging to sweat when it warms up, which could damage the container. Do not get containers wet.
Safety: The amount of citrus oil in this lip balm is very small and heavily diluted by the other ingredients. This lip balm is safe for use outdoors. I have use it myself many times while out all day in the sun and have had no issues (citrus oils are photosensitizing and can cause chemical burns in the sun if applied neat or without enough dilution). While my lip balm is properly diluted, a small percentage of people can be ultra-sensitive to citrus in general, so do a test patch on the inside of your arm near your elbow if you haven’t already determined that citrus oils don’t irritate your skin.
